The coolant light has been on in the car but there was enough coolant after checking. My buddy's car died today and I gave him a jump and had to run the engine for a while and after accelerating on the gas pedal to give more juice smoke started coming out form the radiator area. I quickly stopped the engine pulled the cables and let it cool off. Sure enough the water had flown out of the radiator. Apparently there may be a leak in the hose or radiator. We pulled my battery and put it in the other car and will attend to my car in the morning. I just wanted to know if anyone knows the consequences for driving a car without water in the Radiator?I need advice on what the problem may be with my 1994 Ford Escort Wagon.?
Driving a car without water in it is just as bad as driving it without oil! You could warp heads, blow head gaskets, or pretty much cause any major engine problem including blowing the engine all together. In short, Do not run the car without coolant in the radiator unless you plan on ruining it. If the radiator is leaking coolant, fix the leak where it is. If it just threw out the water because it overheated, then replace the thermostat first before anything else. But to be honest with you, It sounds like you just failed to fill the radiator with coolant properly. That is why your coolant light was on. To fill the radiator properly, first fill up your reservoir, then you need to first fill the radiator while the engine is cold, then continue to add water as the engine warms up and the thermostat opens.I need advice on what the problem may be with my 1994 Ford Escort Wagon.?
My daughter riuned the motor on my Escort station wagon the same way.
The cylinder heads on these cars will warp, or even crack, if overheated too much.
Normally, the coolant in the plastic overflow tank gets drawn back into the radiator when the motor cools down, that's how the level is maintained.
But if you have a leak (bad hose, water pump, overflow cap), the coolant may not flow back. so the plastic tank will appear full, but there will be little or no coolant in the motor.
Besides the two main upper and lower rad hoses, there are a couple of heater hoses behind and between the motor and firewall, and another coolant hose assembly, part rubber, part metal, where the two (yes, two) coolant temp sensors screw into. This assembly is located on the RHS under the air duct and filter, above the transmission.
After filling the system, put on park brake, let the car idle in Park/Neutral to warm up, and keep a watch under the hood for leaks. These will certainly drip onto the ground.
But if the head gasket is blown, and/or head is warped/cracked, the water will escape out the exhaust. Look for steam exiting the pipe. This will require professional attention.
You can continue to drive the car this way for several thousand miles, as long as you keep water in it, stopping and adding every few miles. I used to carry 5 gal of water in jugs.
But eventually, it will die
